Earlier today, I ran into an event on Facebook called “Military Spouses Helping Veterans Heal.” I don’t know about you, but I am all about helping people, especially when those people have needs because of sacrifices they made for this nation. CAMMO (Center for American Military Music Opportunities) provides help to veterans through music therapy, and this Facebook event is one way for you to help them continue to do so! Erin Whitehead from Many Kind Regards has written this beautiful article explaining what this organization is, how the Facebook event works, and how you’ll be helping veterans while also getting some Christmas shopping done.
We have all been asked the question: “If you were stranded on a desert island, and could only keep one creature comfort, what would it be and why?” For me the answer is easy… I would choose my music. All of the many songs, a quirky collection of genres and style, that fill 8 GB on my iPod. Music is the one thing that can lift my spirits, calm me down, motivate me, or help me deal with a rough time. Music heals me.
Music actually has an incredibly powerful ability to heal the human spirit. Since the beginning of time, cultures have used it’s healing powers to promote unity, communicate, celebrate, mourn, and heal. According to www.musictherapy.org, “The 20th century profession formally began after World War I and World War II when community musicians of all types, both amateur and professional, went to Veterans hospitals around the country to play for the thousands of veterans suffering both physical and emotional trauma from the wars. The patients’ notable physical and emotional responses to music led the doctors and nurses to request the hiring of musicians by the hospitals. It was soon evident that the hospital musicians needed some prior training before entering the facility and so the demand grew for a college curriculum.”
Today, music therapy is still making great strides in helping our Veterans suffering from the effects of war. Music therapy is an established health care intervention method that is recognized as a valuable treatment option by many, including the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defense, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the National Intrepid Center of Excellence.
According to www.cammomusic.org, it is a “powerful, non-invasive, and non-pharmacological medium capable of unique outcomes. It is accessible to all and can be used with individuals, groups, or families. Clients need no prior music training to receive services but benefit by active engagement in the therapeutic process that may include creating, learning, listening to, or performing music.”
Music therapy has become instrumental in helping veterans battle conditions like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), and depression. The Center for American Military Music Opportunities (CAMMO) is leading the effort to provide this specialized and effective treatment to as many veterans as possible. CAMMO offers a variety of programs including: Drum Circles, Vibez (a personal, digital, listening program), Guitar Stars, and Operation Song.
Like all great programs, CAMMO wishes to extend these incredible programs to benefit even more of our heroes. And like all great programs… we need your help with funding.
One group of military spouses have come together to do just that. Forming an online fundraiser titled “Military Spouses Helping Veterans Heal”, 15 business owners (all married to active duty service members or veterans) are generously giving, at a minimum, 50% of all their profits from the sale of their products (resulting from event) to this great cause. A grass roots, digital effort, we are asking for your help in spreading the word, raising awareness, and ultimately raising funds that will help CAMMO provide music therapy services on a larger scale.

Thank you in advance for your support. Our heroes are not broken and they are not damaged as a result of their service to our country. But some do desperately need our support in the form of programs that can help give them all of the tools possible to continue to battle the effects of service, long after they return home to American soil. Music therapy has been proven a powerful tool… help us make it available to more of these brave men and women.
